Same-day crowns that restore your tooth’s strength and appearance — no temporary, no second visit
At Poway Modern Dentistry, a damaged, decayed, or weakened tooth doesn’t mean weeks of temporary crowns and follow-up appointments. Dr. Viet Nguyen uses CEREC CAD/CAM technology to design, mill, and place a permanent, custom-fitted crown in a single visit — restoring both function and appearance the same day you walk in.

Who Needs a Dental Crown?
A crown fully encases the visible part of a tooth, providing structural support that fillings or bonding can’t offer once damage passes a certain point. You likely need a crown if you have:
- A cracked or fractured tooth that’s compromised but not beyond saving
- Severe decay too extensive for a standard filling
- A tooth that’s had a root canal and needs protection from future fracture
- A large, failing filling that no longer supports the tooth properly
- Significant wear from years of grinding or heavy bite forces
- A tooth that needs both structural repair and a cosmetic improvement
The line between “this needs a filling” and “this needs a crown” comes down to how much healthy tooth structure remains; a crown becomes necessary once there isn’t enough left to reliably support a filling.
What Actually Happens During Your Crown Appointment
Here’s how the CEREC same-day process works at Poway Modern Dentistry, not the older two-visit method most patients expect.
1. Consultation and digital scan
Dr. Nguyen examines the tooth and, if a crown is needed, takes a digital scan using our intraoral scanner instead of the messy physical impressions older methods require. This scan becomes the blueprint for your custom crown.
2. Tooth preparation
The damaged or decayed portion of the tooth is removed and reshaped to accept the crown. The area is numbed first, so this step is generally no more uncomfortable than getting a filling.
3. Same-day crown design and milling
This is where CEREC technology changes the experience entirely: your crown is designed digitally and milled from a solid block of ceramic material right in our office, while you wait, not weeks later at an outside lab.
4. Placement and bite adjustment
Once milled, the crown is checked for fit, color match, and bite alignment, then permanently bonded into place. You leave the same day with a finished, permanent restoration, no temporary crown, no second appointment, no weeks of waiting.
Crown Materials We Use
We primarily use porcelain and zirconia crowns, chosen for their strength, natural appearance, and biocompatibility. Porcelain is especially well-suited for front teeth because it closely mimics natural enamel, while zirconia offers exceptional durability for back teeth that handle heavier bite forces. Both are metal-free, eliminating any risk of metal allergy or the dark line sometimes visible at the gumline with older metal-based crowns.
Dr. Viet Nguyen: 20+ Years of Restorative Experience
Dr. Viet Nguyen, DDS, brings over 20 years of dental experience to every crown placement, with particular attention to precise fit and natural color matching, the details that determine whether a crown blends seamlessly or stands out. His use of CEREC CAD/CAM technology reflects a broader philosophy of minimizing the number of visits and amount of discomfort required to get patients back to full function.

We accept most dental insurance plans, and crowns are often at least partially covered when medically necessary rather than purely cosmetic. Our team can help verify your specific benefits.
Caring for Your New Crown
Crowns typically last 10 to 15 years or longer with proper care:
- Brush twice daily and floss regularly, including around the crown margin
- Avoid biting into very hard foods (ice, hard candy) that can crack the crown
- Limit sticky foods that can pull at the crown’s seal
- Keep up with routine checkups so any wear is caught early
